How To Download Apps To External Hard Drive Mac High Sierra
I'm having a curious problem with apps I've downloaded from the Mac App Store. Notably, I cannot get them to launch when I copy them to an external drive on the same Mac. They simply report as damaged.
Here's an example case to reproduce:
1. Download the free Xcode 4.1 installer app from the App Store in 10.7.
2. The app will download to /Applications. Copy that app to an external hard drive
3. Attempt to launch the app from the external hard drive.
If you're like me, you'll get an error that the app is damaged.
If you copy that same app from the external drive back to /Applications (even giving it a different name), it will once again launch. This suggests that the bundle is not damaged in any way, but rather there is some odd restriction with the DRM when ran from something other than the boot volume..?
I mentioned the Xcode 4.1 installer above, but I've seen the same happen with multiple other Mac App Store apps, like Grand Theft Auto 3, for example. TBH, I'm not sure if it's something specific to those apps (bad DRM checking?) or a limitation of the Mac App Store in general.
I'd like to keep some App Store apps on an external hard drive to save space and be better organized. I mentioned GTA3 mainly because I store all my games on another drive and they can be quite large. While it's good to know I can keep them on the external drive undamaged as a backup, it's annoying that they cannot be launched from there, so I'm hoping I'm missing something.
